What the job covers

Ductless Mini Split Installation in Bell

We size, mount and connect ductless mini split systems that cool and heat rooms, additions and homes without ducts in Bell.

A "ductless mini-split", the wall unit or ductless AC most people call it, puts a head on the wall of each room it serves and a small condenser outside, joined by copper lines through one small hole. There is no ductwork to build, so the job is the sizing, the mounting, the electrical and the refrigerant work, and we do all of it.

Where it fits

Rooms, Additions and Homes Without Ducts

A mini split suits a room the central system does not reach, an addition, a garage conversion or a home with no ducts at all.

These are the places a mini split fits best.

  • Single rooms

A bedroom, an office or a back room the central air never quite reaches. One head on the wall runs that room at its own temperature.

  • Additions

A new room off the house, where tying into the existing ducts would mean opening walls and ceilings. A head and a line set skip all of that.

  • Garage conversions

A garage turned into a bedroom, a den or a rear unit. A head inside and a condenser on the side wall make it a room you can live in year-round.

  • Homes without ducts

An older house that gets by on a wall furnace and window units. Heads go in the rooms that need them, with one condenser or more outside.

The parts

Indoor Heads, Outdoor Condenser and Refrigerant Line Sets

A ductless mini split has one or more indoor head units, an outdoor condenser and refrigerant line sets that pass through a small hole in the wall.

Two more pieces finish the system: a drain for the water the head pulls out of the air, and power for the condenser. The parts of a mini split are listed below.

  • Indoor head unit

The slim unit high on the wall that blows conditioned air into the room. Each head has its own remote and its own setting.

  • Outdoor condenser

The "condenser", or outdoor unit, sits on a pad or a wall bracket outside and does the heavy lifting for the heads it serves.

  • Refrigerant line set

Insulated copper lines that carry refrigerant between the head and the condenser, through a hole a few inches across.

  • Condensate line

The "condensate drain line" carries water away from the head. Run with the right fall, it keeps water off your wall and floor.

  • Dedicated circuit

The condenser gets its own circuit sized to its maximum current draw, with a disconnect within sight of the unit.

How an installation goes

Sizing, Mounting, Line Set and Vacuum Test

An installation runs from sizing each room, through mounting the heads and condenser and running the line set, to a vacuum test, the charge and startup.

Good installers size with a "Manual J load calculation", the ACCA Manual J standard, not from square footage. The installation steps are listed below in order.

  1. Room sizing

We work out the heat each room takes on, from its windows, walls and use, and that load picks the size of each head and the condenser.

  2. Head and condenser mounting

The bracket goes level and high on the wall for each head, and the condenser goes on a pad or a wall bracket outside where it can breathe.

  3. Line set through the wall

One small hole carries the copper lines, the drain and the control wire out to the condenser, and the run outside is covered and sealed.

  4. Dedicated circuit

The condenser gets its own circuit sized to its maximum current draw, wire of the right gauge and a disconnect within sight of the unit.

  5. Vacuum test

The lines are pulled into a deep vacuum to clear out air and moisture, held to the 500-micron mark the trade uses before refrigerant goes in.

  6. Charge and startup

The refrigerant is opened into the lines, the system starts, and every head is run and checked in cooling and in heating before we clean up.

What it costs

Mini Split Installation Prices and What Sets Them

A mini split installation is priced within a typical range, and the number of heads, the length of the line set and the electrical work set where a job falls in it.

The figures in the panel are published for the Los Angeles area, not our quotes, and a single-zone job means one head on one condenser. What moves a job up or down is listed below.

  • Number of heads. Every room on the system adds a head, its line set and its share of a larger condenser.
  • Line set length. A head on the far side of the house from the condenser needs a longer run of copper and cover.
  • Electrical work. A panel with room for the new circuit costs less than one that needs work to take it.

Who we install for

Residential and Commercial Mini Split Installation

We install mini splits in houses, apartments, shops and offices around Bell.

In a house it is usually the hot back bedroom or the converted garage. In an apartment it can be the whole unit, since many have no ducts. A shop or an office often wants a head in the back room or the office the rooftop unit leaves warm.

Before you decide

Mini Split Heating and Upkeep

A heat pump mini split heats as well as cools, and its filters and coils need regular cleaning to keep it efficient.

A "reversing valve" in the condenser turns the refrigerant around, so the same heads that cool the room in summer warm it in winter. The washable filters behind the head's front panel and the coils inside it collect dust, and a dirty head moves less air for the same power. The short answers to two more questions are below.

  • Ductless Versus Central HVAC Systems

A mini split conditions each room with its own head and no ducts, where central air moves air from one unit through ductwork. A central "split system" keeps its evaporator coil inside with the air handler and its condenser outside, and the ducts carry the air to every room at one setting.

FAQ

Mini Split Installation Questions

What's the average cost to have a mini split installed?

In the Los Angeles area a single-zone mini split typically runs $2,272 to $5,680 installed. The number of heads, the length of the line set and the electrical work set where a job falls. We give a free estimate and quote the whole job before we start, and our guide to HVAC costs in Bell covers what moves a price.

How many square feet will a 12000 BTU mini split cool and heat?

Square footage alone does not answer it. Good installers size a system with a Manual J load calculation, which counts the room's windows, walls, sun and use, so two rooms of the same size can need different heads. We work out each room's load before we pick a head.

What is the $5000 rule for HVAC?

It is a rule of thumb for weighing a repair against a replacement: multiply the system's age in years by the repair price, and when the result passes the figure in its name, replacing usually makes more sense. It matters most when an old window unit or wall heater fails in the room you want a mini split in. We give you both numbers before you decide, and our guide to repairing or replacing a system works through the rule in full.
