The short answer

Heat Pumps Installed in Bell Homes and Businesses

We size, install and test ducted and ductless heat pumps that heat and cool Bell homes and businesses.

Sizing comes first. Good installers work from a load calculation of the building, not from its square footage, and the ACCA Manual J load calculation is the residential standard for it. From there the job covers where the outdoor unit goes, its electrical circuit, the refrigerant lines to the indoor equipment, and a test in both modes before we leave.

One system, two jobs

How a Heat Pump Heats and Cools With a Reversing Valve

A heat pump moves heat rather than making it, and a reversing valve changes the direction the refrigerant flows so the same system either cools the house or heats it.

In summer it does the job of an air conditioner, and in winter it does the job of a furnace. That is why a heat pump sits outside on its pad looking much like an AC condenser.

It is also why a heat pump stuck in one mode, or blowing cold on a heating day, sends a technician to the reversing valve early on.

The same equipment, run two ways

Cooling mode

The indoor coil absorbs warmth from the rooms, and the condenser outside sheds it.

The reversing valve switches the flow

Heating mode

Reversed, the cycle gathers heat from the outside air and releases it inside the house.

What we install

Ducted Heat Pumps and Ductless Mini-Split Heat Pumps

We install ducted heat pumps that run through the home's ducts, and ductless units for homes and rooms without them.

Here are the types we install, and where each one fits.

  • Ducted heat pump

The outdoor unit pairs with an air handler and coil inside, and the heated or cooled air reaches every room through the ducts the house already has.

  • Ductless mini-split heat pump

One or more indoor heads on the walls, an outdoor unit, and refrigerant lines through a small hole in the wall. It fits a home, an addition or a room with no ductwork.

  • Package heat pump

Heating and cooling in one outdoor cabinet on a flat roof or a concrete pad, the setup so many shops and offices run.

How an installation goes

Load Calculation, Placement and Two-Mode Testing

An installation runs from a load calculation and placing the outdoor unit, through the electrical circuit and the line set, to tests in heating and in cooling.

The installation steps are listed below in order.

  1. Load calculation

We work out how much heating and cooling the building needs, and that figure sets the size of the heat pump.

  2. Outdoor unit placement

The outdoor unit goes level on a pad or on wall brackets, with room around it to move air and a short run to the indoor equipment.

  3. Dedicated circuit

The unit gets its own circuit sized to its maximum current draw, wire of the right gauge, and a disconnect within sight of it.

  4. Line set and vacuum

The copper refrigerant lines are run and connected, then pulled into a vacuum to clear air and moisture before the refrigerant goes in.

  5. Heating and cooling tests

We run the system in cooling mode and in heating mode and watch it switch between them before the job is called done.

We quote the whole job before the first step, with no surprise charges after.

What it costs

Heat Pump Installation Prices and What Sets Them

Heat pump installation prices span a wide range, and the system type, its size and the duct work set where a job falls in it.

The figures here are published Los Angeles area prices, not our quote.

Each of these factors is explained below.

  • System type. A ducted heat pump, a ductless mini-split and a package unit are priced differently.
  • Size. The load calculation sets the capacity, and a bigger load calls for bigger equipment.
  • Duct work. Ducts that can be reused cost less than ducts that must be modified.
  • Electrical. The outdoor unit needs a dedicated circuit, and the panel decides how much work that is.

Typical ranges

$3,500 to $9,100

$4,400 to $5,900

Who we install for

Residential and Commercial Heat Pump Installation

We install heat pumps in houses, apartments, shops and offices, and the building decides which kind fits.

  • Houses

Ducted where the ducts are sound, ductless where there are none.

  • Apartments

Ductless heads for units and rooms without ductwork.

  • Shops

A package heat pump on the roof or on a pad.

  • Offices

Sized from the load of the space, ducted or package.

Heat Pump Trade-Offs and Backup Heat

Swapping an old AC and furnace for one heat pump leaves one set of equipment to service, and in sustained cold it may need backup heat.

The questions that remain are about the building: whether its ducts are sound enough for a ducted system, and whether its electrical panel can take a dedicated circuit for the outdoor unit. We look at both at the estimate.

  • Heat Pumps Compared With Other HVAC Systems

A heat pump heats and cools through one refrigerant circuit, where a split AC and furnace use two separate systems. The split AC has an evaporator inside the home and a condenser outside, and the furnace beside the coil does the heating on its own.

FAQ

Heat Pump Installation Questions

How much does a heat pump cost for a 2000 sq ft home?

Floor area alone does not size a heat pump; a load calculation of the house does. For a 3-ton unit, published prices sit at $4,400 to $5,900. Our guide to what HVAC work costs and why the price varies explains the rest, and we quote the whole job at a free estimate.

What is the downside of a heat pump?

In sustained cold a heat pump may need backup heat. It also replaces both the air conditioner and the furnace, so one system carries the heating and the cooling all year.

What is the average cost of having a heat pump installed?

Across the Los Angeles area, a typical heat pump installation runs $3,500 to $9,100. The system type, its size and the duct work set where a job falls, and our page on HVAC costs and why the price varies covers each of them.

How far from a house can a heat pump be located?

The outdoor unit is placed where it can move air freely, and refrigerant lines run from it to the indoor equipment, so a shorter, simpler run is the usual goal. It also needs a disconnect within sight of the unit. We choose the spot with you at the estimate.
