The short answer

New Boiler Installation in Bell

We size, install and test new hot water and steam boilers for Bell homes and buildings.

A boiler heats water in a sealed system and sends hot water or steam out to radiators, baseboard units or in-floor tubing, instead of blowing air through ducts. So a new one is more than the unit on the wall: the gas line, the vent, the water piping and the wiring are all connected and checked before we call the job done.

How the job runs

Gas Piping, Venting, Water Pressure and Electrical Work

A gas boiler installation involves code-regulated gas piping, venting, water pressure and electrical work, on top of setting the boiler itself.

Each of those is its own piece of work with its own rules, which is why we look at all of them before we quote, not after the old boiler is out.

The estimate is free, and the price covers every step listed here.

The installation steps are listed below in order.

  1. Heat-load sizing

We work out how much heat the building actually needs and size the new boiler to that, not to the number on the old one.

  2. Old boiler removal

The gas and power are shut off, the system is drained, and the old boiler is disconnected and carried out.

  3. Gas piping

The gas line is run or reworked to the new boiler. This is code-regulated work, and it is checked for leaks before anything lights.

  4. Venting

The vent is set up for the new boiler so its exhaust leaves the building the way the code and the manufacturer call for.

  5. Water pressure and controls

The system is filled and brought to its working pressure, and the controls go in. A steam boiler gets its own pressure controls.

  6. Electrical work

The boiler, its pump and its controls are wired to power and to the thermostat.

  7. Startup test

We fire the boiler, check that heat reaches every radiator, baseboard or floor loop, and clean up when the work is done.

What we install

Hot Water and Steam Boilers

We install hot water boilers that feed radiators, baseboards or in-floor tubing, and steam boilers with their own controls.

The boiler types we install are listed below.

  • Hot water boiler

Heats water in a sealed loop and pumps it out to radiators, baseboard units or tubing in the floor, then back to the boiler to be heated again. No ducts and no blowing air.

  • Steam boiler

Boils water and sends the steam up to the radiators. A steam system runs on parts of its own, including "Hartford loops", steam traps and pressure controls, and each is set up with the boiler.

Where the heat comes out

The new boiler connects to what the building already heats with, in one of the forms below.

  • Radiators

Cast-iron or panel units in each room, fed by hot water or steam.

  • Baseboard units

Low finned runs along the walls, fed by hot water.

  • In-floor tubing

Loops of tubing under the floor, fed by hot water from a manifold.

Sizing

Sizing a Boiler to the Building's Heat Load

A new boiler is sized from a heat-load calculation of the building, not from the old unit's rating.

The old boiler may have been oversized from the day it went in, and the building may have changed since, with new windows, insulation or an added room. The trade's standard for working out the load is the "Manual J load calculation", which takes the building as it is today.

A boiler that is too big turns on and off in short bursts, what the trade calls "short-cycling", and wears itself out; one that is too small runs flat out on the coldest nights and still leaves rooms cool. Getting the size right is also one of the things that sets the price.

Who we work for

Residential and Commercial Boiler Installation

We install boilers in houses, apartment buildings and commercial buildings.

The building changes the size of the boiler and the length of the piping, not the way the job is done. Every one starts with the same heat-load calculation and the same look at the gas line, the vent and the pipes already in place, so the quote reflects the building you have.

The rules

Permits and Code Rules for Gas Boilers

Whether a permit is needed depends on the work and the jurisdiction, and in most areas installing a gas boiler is illegal without a licensed contractor.

The reason is what the job touches: gas piping, venting, water pressure and electrical work are each code-regulated. A boiler that is vented wrong or piped wrong is a safety problem, not just a heating one.

We sort out what your job needs before the estimate, so the rules are part of the price you hear, not a surprise after.

When a Boiler Repair Is Enough

A boiler under 15 years old is usually worth repairing when the repair costs less than about half a new system.

Boilers can last 20 to 30 years, so a younger boiler with a single failed part rarely needs replacing. On a large repair you hear both numbers from us before you decide.

FAQ

Boiler Installation Questions

What is the average cost to install a new boiler?

In the Los Angeles area, a boiler replacement typically runs $2,211 to $6,485. The estimate is free, and we quote the whole job before we start. Our guide to What HVAC Repair Costs and Why the Price Varies explains why one heating job costs more than another.

What is the average cost to install a boiler?

The boiler type, its size and the gas piping and venting the new boiler needs set the price, as our HVAC cost guide lays out. A swap onto piping and a vent that can be reused sits lower in the typical range, and a job that needs new gas piping or venting sits higher. Your exact price comes from the estimate.

Can I install a boiler myself?

Not a gas boiler. A gas boiler installation involves code-regulated gas piping, venting, water pressure and electrical work, and in most areas it is illegal without a licensed contractor. Whether a permit is needed on top of that depends on the work and the jurisdiction.
